SONIA KAHN, born in Jamaica, W.I., is following her dream to become an ARTIST.
Sonia’s natural artistic talent was recognized in her high school years at Immaculate Conception High School, St. Andrew, Jamaica. After Graduating, she went on to further pursue her education in Art on a part-time basis at The Jamaica School of Art in Kingston, where she attended classes in portrait, figure and landscape drawing and painting.
Even though Art was Sonia’s passion, she also pursued a full-time course at Alpha Commercial College, Kingston, Jamaica after High School and obtained a Secretarial and Accounting Degree. She started a career as a Secretary, but later moved on to becoming a Bookkeeper and then Accountant. She always continued painting whenever she could find the time. In December, 1976, she married and migrated to Florida in 1977. Just starting out in the United States, however, she never envisaged Art as a career; and therefore, continued as a Bookkeeper and Accountant over the years, working and raising a family.
After spending many years in Florida, she returned home to St. Andrew, Jamaica, where she had more time to continue with her love of painting, and was fortunate enough to do so! She joined the first Art Class she could find, with a private tutor and Artist, Fiona Godfrey, from Ireland; and then went on to join Edna Manley College of the Visual Arts, part-time. Sonia set up her own studio in her home, where she paints, when she is not outdoors painting, painting together with her group of other Artist friends, or at a class being tutored always by a famous Jamaican Artist.
Her artistic talent also shows in her creations of silk floral arrangements, which she also enjoys. As she often says, “The culture, people and beauty that Jamaica offers motivates me every day to pursue my dream…I just love my life here!”
As a member of The Jamaica Guild of Artists, she has entered her work in various exhibitions hosted by them. Her ultimate goal, however, is to have enough pieces to host her own Solo Exhibition! Sonia has recently developed a love for painting the human body and it shows in her recent paintings in Acrylic and Oils on Canvas!
Her Original Paintings, Gicle Prints and Flower Arrangements are presently on exhibit at Island Art & Framing, 20 Barbican Road, Kingston 6, Jamaica.
